Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures around today. This is because it helps people rid themselves of unwanted and troublesome areas of fat on their body quickly and easily. It is most often done by women who, though they have worked hard for their figures, have been unable to attain the kind of body they most desire.
Liposuction is usually an outpatient procedure performed by a plastic surgeon. Except in very rare circumstances, it’s considered to be a cosmetic surgery and not covered by insurance, to the tune of several thousand dollars for each procedure. But, for the people receiving liposuction, the results are well worth the cost.
About the procedure
Though the procedure takes less than a day, and you’ll be able to return to work after only a few days, it can take some time before you are healed up enough to see the results. Depending on the procedure, you may be given either a local or a general anesthesia, which may keep you in the hospital longer than anticipated. There is almost always bruising following a liposuction procedure, as well as some discharge from the wounds. It will take several weeks before the swelling goes down completely, and even though you’ll return to work quickly it’s inadvisable to do serious physical activity until you are completely healed – four to six weeks later.
Additionally, after having liposuction you will need to be extra careful about maintaining your weight. People who put on weight after liposuction often find that they gain weight in unexpected places, such as their arms or legs, which gives an odd look to their bodies. The reason for the interesting weight gain is that liposuction does not reset your body’s knowledge of where it last gained weight. That is to say, your body thinks that there is plenty of fat stored in your stomach, so it sends the weight to your back or arms instead. This makes sense biologically – your body thinks that it is distributing fat evenly and doesn’t recognize that you’ve stepped in and removed some of its evolutionary padding from your midsection.
Liposuction can help the very image conscious (and even the moderately image conscious) with their self esteem, giving them the confidence they need to be successful throughout their lives: in their careers and with potential lovers. Liposuction can give people the boost they need to really make themselves excel at everything in their lives.
